Cybersecurity, Courtrooms & ChatGPT: Facing the Practice of 2024

  • How to navigate ethical pitfalls of AI, including hallucinated citations, confidentiality risks, and State Bar guidance.
  • Strategies for protecting client data and responding to cyber incidents—featuring cybersecurity experts and FBI insights.
  • Practical courtroom tech skills for handling digital evidence, remote hearings, and tech-competent advocacy.

The 8th Annual Technology and Justice for All program provided Texas attorneys with a practical, ethics-grounded exploration of the evolving intersection between law and technology. Speakers addressed the ethical use of generative AI in legal practice, including risks related to inaccurate citations, confidentiality, and supervision. Cybersecurity experts and former law enforcement officials walked attendees through real-world breach response protocols, client protection duties, and data privacy best practices.

The program also covered effective use of courtroom technology, with hands-on guidance for presenting digital evidence and adapting to remote hearing environments. Additional sessions focused on legal ethics in the digital age, professional responsibility under Texas and ABA rules, and the impact of emerging tools like ChatGPT on the day-to-day realities of legal work. This one-day event delivered both foundational tech literacy and timely updates on AI, cybersecurity, and courtroom innovation for attorneys practicing in an increasingly digital legal landscape.
